February 9th-part 2

Landscape Composition

This weeks practice was to experiment with different horizon positions.  It was a beautiful late afternoon and I loved seeing the different results.  I totally forgot to do the diagonal pic so had to take it on a different day.  I'd love to see how a good diagonal works....mine looked strange!!

February 9th Exercises

This was the week of metering (and an exercise in patience getting a six year old to sit still while it was a full moon week :-).  In our first exercise, we needed to create four photos:
1) a headshot s evenly lit as possible
2) a headshot lit from the side- exposing either the dark of light side
3) a head shot in silhouette
4) a head shot that was back lit.

They all have such an different feel.  Fun to play with for sure!

Week 4

A work in progress still....

Week 3

This week the goal was to play with water.  The first two shots were to show the water flowing.  The goal was to have the water appear foamy and the bowl remain crisp.  Very slow ss on both.

For these next two, the mission was to have the water appear to be frozen in time.  Fast shutter speeds made it somewhat possible though I'm not totally happy with the focusing on the water droplet on the closeup.  Again...the learning curve.

Week 2

The goal of this week was to create a still life with starting settings atf 8.0, ss 60, iso 100.  That produced a completely black picture for me and thus became the challenge.  Here are a few that turned out....I didn't get three that were exposed properly before the kids got hungry :-).  This one the settings are f 8, ss 2.5, iso 800.  It is bright and everything has decent detail.

This one has a more dreamy feel with the strawberry taking center stage.  The settings:  f 1.4, ss 1/60, iso 800.

Week 1

Task 1- Playing with depth of field, law of reciprocity and f-stops.  I had to definitely use a tri-pod for a few of these....way too much camera shake.

f 22, ss 1.6s , iso 200
f 9, ss 1/4, iso 200
f 3.5, ss 1/25, iso 200

Task 2- Playing with manual focus at AV, f 3.5, iso 200.  The idea was to head outside and find a straight line and focus on different points.  I often get so caught up in taking pics of people that I was surprised how much I loved inanimate objects....they definitely are more patient 'models'!

Task 3- to create a still life and to use 3 distinctly different settings to create a different feeling in each one.

f 4, ss 1/20, iso 800-  I quite like this one.  Bright, a bit grainy.  The background is blurred but the 'critters' are still sharp....minus my little bit wonky focusing....aw...the learning curve!

f 1.4, ss 1/60, iso 100-  The image is still nice and bright.  Though not everything is sharp....like the bokeh.....it draws attention to the word snow....

f 2.5, ss 1/20, iso 400- A much darker exposure....I like the contrast with the white snowman and darker background.  Not sure if it's technically okay but I do like the shady feel to it.
